1
وَٱلصَّٰٓفَّٰتِ
صَفࣰّ
ا

By those [angels] ranged in rows

2
فَٱلزَّٰجِرَٰتِ
زَجۡرࣰ
ا

who rebuke reproachfully

3
فَٱلتَّٰلِيَٰتِ
ذِكۡرًا

and recite God’s word

4
إِنَّ
إِلَٰهَكُمۡ
لَوَٰحِدࣱ‏

truly your God is One

5
رَّبُّ
ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ
وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ
وَمَا
بَيۡنَهُمَا
وَرَبُّ
ٱلۡمَشَٰرِقِ

Lord of the heavens and earth and everything between them, Lord of every sunrise

6
إِنَّا
زَيَّنَّا
ٱلسَّمَآءَ
ٱلدُّنۡيَا
بِزِينَةٍ
ٱلۡكَوَاكِبِ

We have adorned the lowest heaven with stars

7
وَحِفۡظࣰ
ا
مِّن
كُلِّ
شَيۡطَٰنࣲ
مَّارِدࣲ‏

and made them a safeguard against every rebellious devil

8
لَّا
يَسَّمَّعُونَ
إِلَى
ٱلۡمَلَإِ
ٱلۡأَعۡلَىٰ
وَيُقۡذَفُونَ
مِن
كُلِّ
جَانِبࣲ‏

they cannot eavesdrop on the Higher Assembly––pelted from every side

9
دُحُورࣰ
اۖ
وَلَهُمۡ
عَذَابࣱ
وَاصِبٌ

driven away, they will have perpetual torment––

10
إِلَّا
مَنۡ
خَطِفَ
ٱلۡخَطۡفَةَ
فَأَتۡبَعَهُۥ
شِهَابࣱ
ثَاقِبࣱ‏

if any [of them] stealthily snatches away a fragment, he will be pursued by a piercing flame

11
فَٱسۡتَفۡتِهِمۡ
أَهُمۡ
أَشَدُّ
خَلۡقًا
أَم
مَّنۡ
خَلَقۡنَآۚ
إِنَّا
خَلَقۡنَٰهُم
مِّن
طِينࣲ
لَّازِبِۭ
لَازِبٍ

So [Prophet], ask the disbelievers: is it harder to create them than other beings We have created? We created them from sticky clay

12
بَلۡ
عَجِبۡتَ
وَيَسۡخَرُونَ

You marvel as they scoff

13
وَإِذَا
ذُكِّرُواْ
لَا
يَذۡكُرُونَ

take no heed when they are warned

14
وَإِذَا
رَأَوۡاْ
ءَايَةࣰ
يَسۡتَسۡخِرُونَ

and resort to ridicule when they see a sign

15
وَقَالُوٓاْ
إِنۡ
هَٰذَآ
إِلَّا
سِحۡرࣱ
مُّبِينٌ

saying, ‘This is no more than blatant sorcery.’

16
أَءِذَا
مِتۡنَا
وَكُنَّا
تُرَابࣰ
ا
وَعِظَٰمًا
أَءِنَّا

‘What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we really be raised up again

17
أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا
ٱلۡأَوَّلُونَ

along with our forefathers?’

18
قُلۡ
نَعَمۡ
وَأَنتُمۡ
دَٰخِرُونَ

Say, ‘Yes indeed, and you will be humiliated.’

19
فَإِنَّمَا
هِيَ
زَجۡرَةࣱ
وَٰحِدَةࣱ
فَإِذَا
هُمۡ
يَنظُرُونَ

Just one blast and––lo and behold!––they will look

20
وَقَالُواْ
يَٰوَيۡلَنَا
هَٰذَا
يَوۡمُ
ٱلدِّينِ
الدِّينِ

and say, ‘Woe to us! This is the Day of Judgement.’

21
هَٰذَا
يَوۡمُ
ٱلۡفَصۡلِ
ٱلَّذِي
كُنتُم
بِهِۦ
تُكَذِّبُونَ

[It will be said], ‘This is the Day of Decision, which you used to deny

22
۞ٱحۡشُرُواْ
ٱلَّذِينَ
ظَلَمُواْ
وَأَزۡوَٰجَهُمۡ
وَمَا
كَانُواْ
يَعۡبُدُونَ
يَعْبُدُونَ

[Angels], gather together those who did wrong, and others like them, as well as whatever they worshipped

23
مِن
دُونِ
ٱللَّهِ
فَٱهۡدُوهُمۡ
إِلَىٰ
صِرَٰطِ
ٱلۡجَحِيمِ

beside God, lead them all to the path of Hell

24
وَقِفُوهُمۡۖ
إِنَّهُم
مَّسۡـُٔولُونَ
مَسْئُولُونَ

and halt them for questioning

25
مَا
لَكُمۡ
لَا
تَنَاصَرُونَ

“Why do you not support each other now?” ’––

26
بَلۡ
هُمُ
ٱلۡيَوۡمَ
مُسۡتَسۡلِمُونَ

no indeed! They will be in complete submission on that Day––

27
وَأَقۡبَلَ
بَعۡضُهُمۡ
عَلَىٰ
بَعۡضࣲ
يَتَسَآءَلُونَ

and they will turn on one another accusingly

28
قَالُوٓاْ
إِنَّكُمۡ
كُنتُمۡ
تَأۡتُونَنَا
عَنِ
ٱلۡيَمِينِ

They will say, ‘You came to us from a position of power.’

29
قَالُواْ
بَل
لَّمۡ
تَكُونُواْ
مُؤۡمِنِينَ

They will say, ‘No! It was you who would not believe

30
وَمَا
كَانَ
لَنَا
عَلَيۡكُم
مِّن
سُلۡطَٰنِۭۖ
بَلۡ
كُنتُمۡ
قَوۡمࣰ
ا
طَٰغِينَ

we had no power over you- and you were already exceeding all limits

31
فَحَقَّ
عَلَيۡنَا
قَوۡلُ
رَبِّنَآۖ
إِنَّا
لَذَآئِقُونَ
لَذَائِقُونَ

Our Lord’s sentence on us is just and we must all taste the punishment

32
فَأَغۡوَيۡنَٰكُمۡ
إِنَّا
كُنَّا
غَٰوِينَ

We led you astray as we ourselves were astray.’

33
فَإِنَّهُمۡ
يَوۡمَئِذࣲ
فِي
ٱلۡعَذَابِ
مُشۡتَرِكُونَ

On that Day they will all share the torment

34
إِنَّا
كَذَٰلِكَ
نَفۡعَلُ
بِٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ

this is how We deal with the guilty

35
إِنَّهُمۡ
كَانُوٓاْ
إِذَا
قِيلَ
لَهُمۡ
لَآ
إِلَٰهَ
إِلَّا
ٱللَّهُ
يَسۡتَكۡبِرُونَ

Whenever it was said to them, ‘There is no deity but God,’ they became arrogant

36
وَيَقُولُونَ
أَئِنَّا
لَتَارِكُوٓاْ
ءَالِهَتِنَا
لِشَاعِرࣲ
مَّجۡنُونِۭ

and said, ‘Are we to forsake our gods for a mad poet?’

37
بَلۡ
جَآءَ
بِٱلۡحَقِّ
وَصَدَّقَ
ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ

‘No: he brought the truth and confirmed the earlier messengers

38
إِنَّكُمۡ
لَذَآئِقُواْ
ٱلۡعَذَابِ
ٱلۡأَلِيمِ

you will taste the painful torment

39
وَمَا
تُجۡزَوۡنَ
إِلَّا
مَا
كُنتُمۡ
تَعۡمَلُونَ

and be repaid only according to your deeds.’

40
إِلَّا
عِبَادَ
ٱللَّهِ
ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِينَ

Not so God’s true servants

41
أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ
لَهُمۡ
رِزۡقࣱ
مَّعۡلُومࣱ‏

They will have familiar provisions––

42
فَوَٰكِهُ
وَهُم
مُّكۡرَمُونَ
مُكْرَمُونَ

fruits- and will be honoured

43
فِي
جَنَّٰتِ
ٱلنَّعِيمِ

in gardens of delight

44
عَلَىٰ
سُرُرࣲ
مُّتَقَٰبِلِينَ

seated on couches, facing one another

45
يُطَافُ
عَلَيۡهِم
بِكَأۡسࣲ
مِّن
مَّعِينِۭ

A drink will be passed round among them from a flowing spring

46
بَيۡضَآءَ
لَذَّةࣲ
لِّلشَّٰرِبِينَ

white, delicious to those who taste it

47
لَا
فِيهَا
غَوۡلࣱ
وَلَا
هُمۡ
عَنۡهَا
يُنزَفُونَ

causing no headiness or intoxication

48
وَعِندَهُمۡ
قَٰصِرَٰتُ
ٱلطَّرۡفِ
عِينࣱ‏

With them will be spouses- modest of gaze and beautiful of eye

49
كَأَنَّهُنَّ
بَيۡضࣱ
مَّكۡنُونࣱ‏

like protected eggs

50
فَأَقۡبَلَ
بَعۡضُهُمۡ
عَلَىٰ
بَعۡضࣲ
يَتَسَآءَلُونَ

They will turn to one another with questions

51
قَالَ
قَآئِلࣱ
مِّنۡهُمۡ
إِنِّي
كَانَ
لِي
قَرِينࣱ‏

one will say, ‘I had a close companion on earth

52
يَقُولُ
أَءِنَّكَ
لَمِنَ
ٱلۡمُصَدِّقِينَ

who used to ask me, “Do you really believe that

53
أَءِذَا
مِتۡنَا
وَكُنَّا
تُرَابࣰ
ا
وَعِظَٰمًا
أَءِنَّا

after we die and become dust and bone, we shall be brought for judgement?”’

54
قَالَ
هَلۡ
أَنتُم
مُّطَّلِعُونَ

Then he will say, ‘Shall we look for him?’

55
فَٱطَّلَعَ
فَرَءَاهُ
فِي
سَوَآءِ
ٱلۡجَحِيمِ

He will look down and see him in the midst of the Fire

56
قَالَ
تَٱللَّهِ
إِن
كِدتَّ
لَتُرۡدِينِ

and say to him, ‘By God, you almost brought me to ruin

57
وَلَوۡلَا
نِعۡمَةُ
رَبِّي
لَكُنتُ
مِنَ
ٱلۡمُحۡضَرِينَ

Had it not been for the grace of my Lord, I too would have been taken to Hell.’

58
أَفَمَا
نَحۡنُ
بِمَيِّتِينَ

Then he will say [to his blessed companions], ‘Are we never to die again after our earlier death

59
إِلَّا
مَوۡتَتَنَا
ٱلۡأُولَىٰ
وَمَا
نَحۡنُ
بِمُعَذَّبِينَ

Shall we never suffer

60
إِنَّ
هَٰذَا
لَهُوَ
ٱلۡفَوۡزُ
ٱلۡعَظِيمُ

This truly is the supreme triumph!’

61
لِمِثۡلِ
هَٰذَا
فَلۡيَعۡمَلِ
ٱلۡعَٰمِلُونَ

Everyone should strive to attain this

62
أَذَٰلِكَ
خَيۡرࣱ
نُّزُلًا
أَمۡ
شَجَرَةُ
ٱلزَّقُّومِ

Is this the better welcome, or the tree of Zaqqum

63
إِنَّا
جَعَلۡنَٰهَا
فِتۡنَةࣰ
لِّلظَّٰلِمِينَ

which we have made a test for the evildoers

64
إِنَّهَا
شَجَرَةࣱ
تَخۡرُجُ
فِيٓ
أَصۡلِ
ٱلۡجَحِيمِ

This tree grows in the heart of the blazing Fire

65
طَلۡعُهَا
كَأَنَّهُۥ
رُءُوسُ
ٱلشَّيَٰطِينِ

and its fruits are like devils’ heads

66
فَإِنَّهُمۡ
لَأٓكِلُونَ
مِنۡهَا
فَمَالِـُٔونَ
مِنۡهَا
ٱلۡبُطُونَ

They will fill their bellies eating from it

67
ثُمَّ
إِنَّ
لَهُمۡ
عَلَيۡهَا
لَشَوۡبࣰ
ا
مِّنۡ

then drink scalding water on top of it

68
ثُمَّ
إِنَّ
مَرۡجِعَهُمۡ
لَإِلَى
ٱلۡجَحِيمِ

then return to the blazing Fire

69
إِنَّهُمۡ
أَلۡفَوۡاْ
ءَابَآءَهُمۡ
ضَآلِّينَ

They found their forefathers astray

70
فَهُمۡ
عَلَىٰٓ
ءَاثَٰرِهِمۡ
يُهۡرَعُونَ

and rushed to follow in their footsteps- before the disbelievers [of Mecca]

71
وَلَقَدۡ
ضَلَّ
قَبۡلَهُمۡ
أَكۡثَرُ
ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ

most men in the past went astray

72
وَلَقَدۡ
أَرۡسَلۡنَا
فِيهِم
مُّنذِرِينَ

even though We sent messengers to warn them

73
فَٱنظُرۡ
كَيۡفَ
كَانَ
عَٰقِبَةُ
ٱلۡمُنذَرِينَ

See how those who were warned met their end

74
إِلَّا
عِبَادَ
ٱللَّهِ
ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِينَ

Not so the true servants of God

75
وَلَقَدۡ
نَادَىٰنَا
نُوحࣱ
فَلَنِعۡمَ
ٱلۡمُجِيبُونَ

Noah cried to Us, and how excellent was Our response

76
وَنَجَّيۡنَٰهُ
وَأَهۡلَهُۥ
مِنَ
ٱلۡكَرۡبِ
ٱلۡعَظِيمِ

We saved him and his people from great distress

77
وَجَعَلۡنَا
ذُرِّيَّتَهُۥ
هُمُ
ٱلۡبَاقِينَ

We let his offspring remain on the earth

78
وَتَرَكۡنَا
عَلَيۡهِ
فِي
ٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ

We let him be praised by later generations

79
سَلَٰمٌ
عَلَىٰ
نُوحࣲ
فِي
ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ

‘Peace be upon Noah among all the nations!’

80
إِنَّا
كَذَٰلِكَ
نَجۡزِي
ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ

This is how We reward those who do good

81
إِنَّهُۥ
مِنۡ
عِبَادِنَا
ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

he was truly one of Our faithful servants

82
ثُمَّ
أَغۡرَقۡنَا
ٱلۡأٓخَرِينَ

We drowned the rest

83
۞وَإِنَّ
مِن
شِيعَتِهِۦ
لَإِبۡرَٰهِيمَ
لَإِبْرَاهِيمَ

Abraham was of the same faith

84
إِذۡ
جَآءَ
رَبَّهُۥ
بِقَلۡبࣲ
سَلِيمٍ

he came to his Lord with a devoted heart

85
إِذۡ
قَالَ
لِأَبِيهِ
وَقَوۡمِهِۦ
مَاذَا
تَعۡبُدُونَ

He said to his father and his people, ‘What are you worshipping

86
أَئِفۡكًا
ءَالِهَةࣰ
دُونَ
ٱللَّهِ
تُرِيدُونَ

How can you choose false gods instead of the true God

87
فَمَا
ظَنُّكُم
بِرَبِّ
ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ

So what is your opinion about the Lord of all the Worlds?’

88
فَنَظَرَ
نَظۡرَةࣰ
فِي
ٱلنُّجُومِ

then he looked up to the stars

89
فَقَالَ
إِنِّي
سَقِيمࣱ‏

He said, ‘I am sick,’

90
فَتَوَلَّوۡاْ
عَنۡهُ
مُدۡبِرِينَ

so [his people] turned away from him and left

91
فَرَاغَ
إِلَىٰٓ
ءَالِهَتِهِمۡ
فَقَالَ
أَلَا
تَأۡكُلُونَ

He turned to their gods and said

92
مَا
لَكُمۡ
لَا
تَنطِقُونَ

‘Do you not eat? Why do you not speak?’

93
فَرَاغَ
عَلَيۡهِمۡ
ضَرۡبَۢا
بِٱلۡيَمِينِ

then he turned and struck them with his right arm

94
فَأَقۡبَلُوٓاْ
إِلَيۡهِ
يَزِفُّونَ

His people hurried towards him

95
قَالَ
أَتَعۡبُدُونَ
مَا
تَنۡحِتُونَ

but he said, ‘How can you worship things you carve with your own hands

96
وَٱللَّهُ
خَلَقَكُمۡ
وَمَا
تَعۡمَلُونَ

when it is God who has created you and all your handiwork?’

97
قَالُواْ
ٱبۡنُواْ
لَهُۥ
بُنۡيَٰنࣰ
ا
فَأَلۡقُوهُ
فِي

They said, ‘Build a pyre and throw him into the blazing fire.’

98
فَأَرَادُواْ
بِهِۦ
كَيۡدࣰ
ا
فَجَعَلۡنَٰهُمُ

They wanted to harm him, but We humiliated them

99
وَقَالَ
إِنِّي
ذَاهِبٌ
إِلَىٰ
رَبِّي
سَيَهۡدِينِ

He said, ‘I will go to my Lord: He is sure to guide me

100
رَبِّ
هَبۡ
لِي
مِنَ
ٱلصَّٰلِحِينَ

Lord, grant me a righteous son,’

101
فَبَشَّرۡنَٰهُ
بِغُلَٰمٍ
حَلِيمࣲ‏

so We gave him the good news that he would have a patient son

102
فَلَمَّا
بَلَغَ
مَعَهُ
ٱلسَّعۡيَ
قَالَ
يَٰبُنَيَّ
إِنِّيٓ
أَرَىٰ
فِي
ٱلۡمَنَامِ
أَنِّيٓ
أَذۡبَحُكَ
فَٱنظُرۡ
مَاذَا
تَرَىٰۚ
قَالَ
يَٰٓأَبَتِ
ٱفۡعَلۡ
مَا
تُؤۡمَرُۖ
سَتَجِدُنِيٓ
إِن
شَآءَ
ٱللَّهُ
مِنَ
ٱلصَّٰبِرِينَ
شَاءَ
اللَّهُ
مِنَ
الصَّابِرِينَ

When the boy was old enough to work with his father, Abraham said, ‘My son, I have seen myself sacrificing you in a dream. What do you think?’ He said, ‘Father, do as you are commanded and, God willing, you will find me steadfast.’

103
فَلَمَّآ
أَسۡلَمَا
وَتَلَّهُۥ
لِلۡجَبِينِ

When they had both submitted to God, and he had laid his son down on the side of his face

104
وَنَٰدَيۡنَٰهُ
أَن
يَٰٓإِبۡرَٰهِيمُ
إِبْرَاهِيمُ

We called out to him, ‘Abraham

105
قَدۡ
صَدَّقۡتَ
ٱلرُّءۡيَآۚ
إِنَّا
كَذَٰلِكَ
نَجۡزِي
ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ
الْمُحْسِنِينَ

you have fulfilled the dream.’ This is how We reward those who do good

106
إِنَّ
هَٰذَا
لَهُوَ
ٱلۡبَلَٰٓؤُاْ
ٱلۡمُبِينُ

it was a test to prove [their true characters]

107
وَفَدَيۡنَٰهُ
بِذِبۡحٍ
عَظِيمࣲ‏

We ransomed his son with a momentous sacrifice

108
وَتَرَكۡنَا
عَلَيۡهِ
فِي
ٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ

and We let him be praised by succeeding generations

109
سَلَٰمٌ
عَلَىٰٓ
إِبۡرَٰهِيمَ

‘Peace be upon Abraham!’

110
كَذَٰلِكَ
نَجۡزِي
ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ

This is how We reward those who do good

111
إِنَّهُۥ
مِنۡ
عِبَادِنَا
ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

truly he was one of Our faithful servants

112
وَبَشَّرۡنَٰهُ
بِإِسۡحَٰقَ
نَبِيࣰّ
ا
مِّنَ

We gave Abraham the good news of Isaac- a prophet and a righteous man

113
وَبَٰرَكۡنَا
عَلَيۡهِ
وَعَلَىٰٓ
إِسۡحَٰقَۚ
وَمِن
ذُرِّيَّتِهِمَا
مُحۡسِنࣱ
وَظَالِمࣱ
لِّنَفۡسِهِۦ
مُبِينࣱ‏
مُبِينٌ

and blessed him and Isaac too: some of their offspring were good, but some clearly wronged themselves

114
وَلَقَدۡ
مَنَنَّا
عَلَىٰ
مُوسَىٰ
وَهَٰرُونَ

We also bestowed Our favour on Moses and Aaron

115
وَنَجَّيۡنَٰهُمَا
وَقَوۡمَهُمَا
مِنَ
ٱلۡكَرۡبِ
ٱلۡعَظِيمِ

We saved them and their people from great distress

116
وَنَصَرۡنَٰهُمۡ
فَكَانُواْ
هُمُ
ٱلۡغَٰلِبِينَ

We helped them, so they were the ones to succeed

117
وَءَاتَيۡنَٰهُمَا
ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ
ٱلۡمُسۡتَبِينَ

We gave them the Scripture that makes things clear

118
وَهَدَيۡنَٰهُمَا
ٱلصِّرَٰطَ
ٱلۡمُسۡتَقِيمَ

We guided them to the right path

119
وَتَرَكۡنَا
عَلَيۡهِمَا
فِي
ٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ

We let them be praised by succeeding generations

120
سَلَٰمٌ
عَلَىٰ
مُوسَىٰ
وَهَٰرُونَ

‘Peace be upon Moses and Aaron!’

121
إِنَّا
كَذَٰلِكَ
نَجۡزِي
ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ

This is how We reward those who do good

122
إِنَّهُمَا
مِنۡ
عِبَادِنَا
ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

truly they were among Our faithful servants

123
وَإِنَّ
إِلۡيَاسَ
لَمِنَ
ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ

Elijah too was one of the messengers

124
إِذۡ
قَالَ
لِقَوۡمِهِۦٓ
أَلَا
تَتَّقُونَ

He said to his people, ‘Have you no fear of God

125
أَتَدۡعُونَ
بَعۡلࣰ
ا
وَتَذَرُونَ
أَحۡسَنَ

How can you invoke Baal and forsake the Most Gracious Creator

126
ٱللَّهَ
رَبَّكُمۡ
وَرَبَّ
ءَابَآئِكُمُ
ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ

God, your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers?’

127
فَكَذَّبُوهُ
فَإِنَّهُمۡ
لَمُحۡضَرُونَ

but they rejected him. They will be brought to punishment as a consequence

128
إِلَّا
عِبَادَ
ٱللَّهِ
ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِينَ

not so the true servants of God

129
وَتَرَكۡنَا
عَلَيۡهِ
فِي
ٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ

We let him be praised by succeeding generations

130
سَلَٰمٌ
عَلَىٰٓ
إِلۡ
يَاسِينَ

‘Peace be to Elijah!’

131
إِنَّا
كَذَٰلِكَ
نَجۡزِي
ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ

This is how We reward those who do good

132
إِنَّهُۥ
مِنۡ
عِبَادِنَا
ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

truly he was one of Our faithful servants

133
وَإِنَّ
لُوطࣰ
ا
لَّمِنَ

Lot was also one of the messengers

134
إِذۡ
نَجَّيۡنَٰهُ
وَأَهۡلَهُۥٓ
أَجۡمَعِينَ

We saved him and all his family

135
إِلَّا
عَجُوزࣰ
ا
فِي

except for an old woman who stayed behind

136
ثُمَّ
دَمَّرۡنَا
ٱلۡأٓخَرِينَ

and We destroyed the rest

137
وَإِنَّكُمۡ
لَتَمُرُّونَ
عَلَيۡهِم
مُّصۡبِحِينَ

You [people] pass by their ruins morning

138
وَبِٱلَّيۡلِۚ
أَفَلَا
تَعۡقِلُونَ
تَعْقِلُونَ

and night: will you not take heed

139
وَإِنَّ
يُونُسَ
لَمِنَ
ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ

Jonah too was one of the messengers

140
إِذۡ
أَبَقَ
إِلَى
ٱلۡفُلۡكِ
ٱلۡمَشۡحُونِ

He fled to the overloaded ship

141
فَسَاهَمَ
فَكَانَ
مِنَ
ٱلۡمُدۡحَضِينَ

They cast lots, he suffered defeat

142
فَٱلۡتَقَمَهُ
ٱلۡحُوتُ
وَهُوَ
مُلِيمࣱ‏

and a great fish swallowed him, for he had committed blameworthy acts

143
فَلَوۡلَآ
أَنَّهُۥ
كَانَ
مِنَ
ٱلۡمُسَبِّحِينَ

If he had not been one of those who glorified God

144
لَلَبِثَ
فِي
بَطۡنِهِۦٓ
إِلَىٰ
يَوۡمِ
يُبۡعَثُونَ

he would have stayed in its belly until the Day when all are raised up

145
۞فَنَبَذۡنَٰهُ
بِٱلۡعَرَآءِ
وَهُوَ
سَقِيمࣱ‏
سَقِيمٌ

but We cast him out, sick, on to a barren shore

146
وَأَنۢبَتۡنَا
عَلَيۡهِ
شَجَرَةࣰ
مِّن
يَقۡطِينࣲ‏

and made a gourd tree grow above him

147
وَأَرۡسَلۡنَٰهُ
إِلَىٰ
مِاْئَةِ
أَلۡفٍ
أَوۡ
يَزِيدُونَ

We sent him to a hundred thousand people or more

148
فَـَٔامَنُواْ
فَمَتَّعۡنَٰهُمۡ
إِلَىٰ
حِينࣲ‏

They believed, so We let them live out their lives

149
فَٱسۡتَفۡتِهِمۡ
أَلِرَبِّكَ
ٱلۡبَنَاتُ
وَلَهُمُ
ٱلۡبَنُونَ

Now [Muhammad], ask the disbelievers: is it true that your Lord has daughters, while they choose sons for themselves

150
أَمۡ
خَلَقۡنَا
ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةَ
إِنَٰثࣰ
ا
وَهُمۡ

Did We create the angels as females while they were watching

151
أَلَآ
إِنَّهُم
مِّنۡ
إِفۡكِهِمۡ
لَيَقُولُونَ

No indeed! It is one of their lies when they say

152
وَلَدَ
ٱللَّهُ
وَإِنَّهُمۡ
لَكَٰذِبُونَ

‘God has begotten.’ How they lie

153
أَصۡطَفَى
ٱلۡبَنَاتِ
عَلَى
ٱلۡبَنِينَ

Did He truly choose daughters in preference to sons

154
مَا
لَكُمۡ
كَيۡفَ
تَحۡكُمُونَ

What is the matter with you? How do you form your judgements

155
أَفَلَا
تَذَكَّرُونَ

Do you not reflect

156
أَمۡ
لَكُمۡ
سُلۡطَٰنࣱ
مُّبِينࣱ‏

Do you perhaps have clear authority

157
فَأۡتُواْ
بِكِتَٰبِكُمۡ
إِن
كُنتُمۡ
صَٰدِقِينَ

Bring your scriptures, if you are telling the truth

158
وَجَعَلُواْ
بَيۡنَهُۥ
وَبَيۡنَ
ٱلۡجِنَّةِ
نَسَبࣰ
اۚ
وَلَقَدۡ
عَلِمَتِ
ٱلۡجِنَّةُ
إِنَّهُمۡ
لَمُحۡضَرُونَ

They claim that He has kinship with the jinn, yet the jinn themselves know that they will be brought before Him

159
سُبۡحَٰنَ
ٱللَّهِ
عَمَّا
يَصِفُونَ

God is far above what they attribute to Him

160
إِلَّا
عِبَادَ
ٱللَّهِ
ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِينَ

the true servants of God do not do such things

161
فَإِنَّكُمۡ
وَمَا
تَعۡبُدُونَ

and neither you nor what you worship

162
مَآ
أَنتُمۡ
عَلَيۡهِ
بِفَٰتِنِينَ

can lure away from God any

163
إِلَّا
مَنۡ
هُوَ
صَالِ
ٱلۡجَحِيمِ

except those who will burn in Hell

164
وَمَا
مِنَّآ
إِلَّا
لَهُۥ
مَقَامࣱ
مَّعۡلُومࣱ‏

[The angels say], ‘Every single one of us has his appointed place

165
وَإِنَّا
لَنَحۡنُ
ٱلصَّآفُّونَ

we are ranged in ranks

166
وَإِنَّا
لَنَحۡنُ
ٱلۡمُسَبِّحُونَ

We glorify God.’

167
وَإِن
كَانُواْ
لَيَقُولُونَ

[The disbelievers] used to say

168
لَوۡ
أَنَّ
عِندَنَا
ذِكۡرࣰ
ا
مِّنَ

‘If only we had a scripture like previous people

169
لَكُنَّا
عِبَادَ
ٱللَّهِ
ٱلۡمُخۡلَصِينَ

we would be true servants of God,’

170
فَكَفَرُواْ
بِهِۦۖ
فَسَوۡفَ
يَعۡلَمُونَ
يَعْلَمُونَ

yet now they reject [the Quran]. They will soon realize

171
وَلَقَدۡ
سَبَقَتۡ
كَلِمَتُنَا
لِعِبَادِنَا
ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ

Our word has already been given to Our servants the messengers

172
إِنَّهُمۡ
لَهُمُ
ٱلۡمَنصُورُونَ

it is they who will be helped

173
وَإِنَّ
جُندَنَا
لَهُمُ
ٱلۡغَٰلِبُونَ

and the ones who support Our cause will be the winners

174
فَتَوَلَّ
عَنۡهُمۡ
حَتَّىٰ
حِينࣲ‏

So [Prophet] turn away from the disbelievers for a while

175
وَأَبۡصِرۡهُمۡ
فَسَوۡفَ
يُبۡصِرُونَ

Watch them: they will soon see

176
أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا
يَسۡتَعۡجِلُونَ

Do they really wish to hasten Our punishment

177
فَإِذَا
نَزَلَ
بِسَاحَتِهِمۡ
فَسَآءَ
صَبَاحُ
ٱلۡمُنذَرِينَ

When it descends on their courtyards, how ter-rible that morning will be for those who were warned

178
وَتَوَلَّ
عَنۡهُمۡ
حَتَّىٰ
حِينࣲ‏

[Prophet], turn away from the disbelievers for a while

179
وَأَبۡصِرۡ
فَسَوۡفَ
يُبۡصِرُونَ

Watch them: they will soon see

180
سُبۡحَٰنَ
رَبِّكَ
رَبِّ
ٱلۡعِزَّةِ
عَمَّا
يَصِفُونَ

Your Lord, the Lord of Glory, is far above what they attribute to Him

181
وَسَلَٰمٌ
عَلَى
ٱلۡمُرۡسَلِينَ

Peace be upon the messengers

182
وَٱلۡحَمۡدُ
لِلَّهِ
رَبِّ
ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ

and praise be to God the Lord of all the Worlds
