The Ascending StairwaysMecca
70
1
سَأَلَ
سَآئِلُۢ
بِعَذَابࣲ
وَاقِعࣲ‏

A man [mockingly] demanded the punishment

2
لِّلۡكَٰفِرِينَ
لَيۡسَ
لَهُۥ
دَافِعࣱ‏

It will fall on the disbelievers––none can deflect it––

3
مِّنَ
ٱللَّهِ
ذِي
ٱلۡمَعَارِجِ

from God, the Lord of the Ways of Ascent

4
تَعۡرُجُ
ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةُ
وَٱلرُّوحُ
إِلَيۡهِ
فِي
يَوۡمࣲ
كَانَ
مِقۡدَارُهُۥ
خَمۡسِينَ
أَلۡفَ
سَنَةࣲ‏

by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him, on a Day whose length is fifty thousand years

5
فَٱصۡبِرۡ
صَبۡرࣰ
ا
جَمِيلًا

So be patient, [Prophet], as befits you

6
إِنَّهُمۡ
يَرَوۡنَهُۥ
بَعِيدࣰ
ا

The disbelievers think it is distant

7
وَنَرَىٰهُ
قَرِيبࣰ
ا

but We know it to be close

8
يَوۡمَ
تَكُونُ
ٱلسَّمَآءُ
كَٱلۡمُهۡلِ
ﯿ

On a Day when the heavens will be like molten brass

9
وَتَكُونُ
ٱلۡجِبَالُ
كَٱلۡعِهۡنِ

and the mountains like tufts of wool

10
وَلَا
يَسۡـَٔلُ
حَمِيمٌ
حَمِيمࣰ
ا

when no friend will ask about his friend

11
يُبَصَّرُونَهُمۡۚ
يَوَدُّ
ٱلۡمُجۡرِمُ
لَوۡ
يَفۡتَدِي
مِنۡ
عَذَابِ
يَوۡمِئِذِۭ
بِبَنِيهِ
بِبَنِيهِ

even when they are within sight of one another. The guilty person will wish he could save himself from the suffering of that Day by sacrificing his sons

12
وَصَٰحِبَتِهِۦ
وَأَخِيهِ

his spouse, his brother

13
وَفَصِيلَتِهِ
ٱلَّتِي
تُـٔۡوِيهِ

the kinsfolk who gave him shelter

14
وَمَن
فِي
ٱلۡأَرۡضِ
جَمِيعࣰ
ا
ثُمَّ

and everyone on earth, if it could save him

15
كَلَّآۖ
إِنَّهَا
لَظَىٰ
لَظَىٰ

But no! There is a raging flame

16
نَزَّاعَةࣰ
لِّلشَّوَىٰ

that strips away the skin

17
تَدۡعُواْ
مَنۡ
أَدۡبَرَ
وَتَوَلَّىٰ

and it will claim everyone who rejects the truth, turns away

18
وَجَمَعَ
فَأَوۡعَىٰٓ

amasses wealth and hoards it

19
۞إِنَّ
ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ
خُلِقَ
هَلُوعًا
هَلُوعًا

Man was truly created anxious

20
إِذَا
مَسَّهُ
ٱلشَّرُّ
جَزُوعࣰ

he is fretful when misfortune touches him

21
وَإِذَا
مَسَّهُ
ٱلۡخَيۡرُ
مَنُوعًا

but tight-fisted when good fortune comes his way

22
إِلَّا
ٱلۡمُصَلِّينَ

Not so those who pray

23
ٱلَّذِينَ
هُمۡ
عَلَىٰ
صَلَاتِهِمۡ
دَآئِمُونَ

and are constant in their prayers

24
وَٱلَّذِينَ
فِيٓ
أَمۡوَٰلِهِمۡ
حَقࣱّ
مَّعۡلُومࣱ‏

who give a due share of their wealth

25
لِّلسَّآئِلِ
وَٱلۡمَحۡرُومِ

to beggars and the deprived

26
وَٱلَّذِينَ
يُصَدِّقُونَ
بِيَوۡمِ
ٱلدِّينِ

who believe in the Day of Judgement

27
وَٱلَّذِينَ
هُم
مِّنۡ
عَذَابِ
رَبِّهِم
مُّشۡفِقُونَ

and fear the punishment of their Lord––

28
إِنَّ
عَذَابَ
رَبِّهِمۡ
غَيۡرُ
مَأۡمُونࣲ‏

none may feel wholly secure from it––

29
وَٱلَّذِينَ
هُمۡ
لِفُرُوجِهِمۡ
حَٰفِظُونَ

who guard their chastity

30
إِلَّا
عَلَىٰٓ
أَزۡوَٰجِهِمۡ
أَوۡ
مَا
مَلَكَتۡ
أَيۡمَٰنُهُمۡ
فَإِنَّهُمۡ
غَيۡرُ
مَلُومِينَ

from all but their spouses or their slave-girls––there is no blame attached to [relations with] these

31
فَمَنِ
ٱبۡتَغَىٰ
وَرَآءَ
ذَٰلِكَ
فَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ
هُمُ
ٱلۡعَادُونَ

but those whose desires exceed this limit are truly transgressors––

32
وَٱلَّذِينَ
هُمۡ
لِأَمَٰنَٰتِهِمۡ
وَعَهۡدِهِمۡ
رَٰعُونَ

who are faithful to their trusts and their pledges

33
وَٱلَّذِينَ
هُم
بِشَهَٰدَٰتِهِمۡ
قَآئِمُونَ

who give honest testimony

34
وَٱلَّذِينَ
هُمۡ
عَلَىٰ
صَلَاتِهِمۡ
يُحَافِظُونَ

and are steadfast in their prayers

35
أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ
فِي
جَنَّٰتࣲ
مُّكۡرَمُونَ

They will be honoured in Gardens of bliss

36
فَمَالِ
ٱلَّذِينَ
كَفَرُواْ
قِبَلَكَ
مُهۡطِعِينَ

What is wrong with the disbelievers? Why do they rush to peer at you [Prophet]

37
عَنِ
ٱلۡيَمِينِ
وَعَنِ
ٱلشِّمَالِ
عِزِينَ

from right and left, in crowds

38
أَيَطۡمَعُ
كُلُّ
ٱمۡرِيࣲٕ
مِّنۡهُمۡ
أَن
يُدۡخَلَ
جَنَّةَ
نَعِيمࣲ‏

Does every one of them expect to enter a Garden of bliss

39
كَلَّآۖ
إِنَّا
خَلَقۡنَٰهُم
مِّمَّا
يَعۡلَمُونَ
يَعْلَمُونَ

No! We created them from the substance they know

40
فَلَآ
أُقۡسِمُ
بِرَبِّ
ٱلۡمَشَٰرِقِ
وَٱلۡمَغَٰرِبِ
إِنَّا
لَقَٰدِرُونَ

and, by the Lord of every sunrise and sunset, We have the power

41
عَلَىٰٓ
أَن
نُّبَدِّلَ
خَيۡرࣰ
ا
مِّنۡهُمۡ
وَمَا
نَحۡنُ

to substitute for them others better than they are- nothing can prevent Us from doing this

42
فَذَرۡهُمۡ
يَخُوضُواْ
وَيَلۡعَبُواْ
حَتَّىٰ
يُلَٰقُواْ
يَوۡمَهُمُ
ٱلَّذِي
يُوعَدُونَ

So leave them to wallow in idle talk, until they come face to face with their promised Day

43
يَوۡمَ
يَخۡرُجُونَ
مِنَ
ٱلۡأَجۡدَاثِ
سِرَاعࣰ
ا
كَأَنَّهُمۡ
إِلَىٰ
نُصُبࣲ

the Day they will rush out of their graves as if rallying to a flag

44
خَٰشِعَةً
أَبۡصَٰرُهُمۡ
تَرۡهَقُهُمۡ
ذِلَّةࣱۚ
ذَٰلِكَ
ٱلۡيَوۡمُ
ٱلَّذِي
كَانُواْ
يُوعَدُونَ
يُوعَدُونَ

eyes downcast and covered in shame: that is the Day of which they were warned
